Database certification

Bloomberg, LSEG and Capital IQ provide access to online learning to help you use their databases and introduce you to the financial markets.

Successfully completing these courses will earn you a certificate which you can add to your CV and/or LinkedIn page to demonstrate your knowledge of the tools used by financial markets professionals.  These courses are free for Business School students.

Information on access to Bloomberg, LSEG and Capital IQ Pro is available from the Company & Financial databases section of this guide.

Please note: access to Bloomberg and LSEG databases are restricted to Business School Y3 and Y4 undergraduate students and Business School postgraduate students.

Bloomberg Finance Fundamentals Certificate

Bloomberg Finance Fundamentals (BFF) is a self-paced, interactive e-learning course that provides an introduction to the key concepts involved in finance and investment. Throughout the course, you’ll explore real-life scenarios through the perspectives of various professionals, helping you to manage your money and build an understanding of the different careers available across the finance sector.

Bloomberg Finance Fundamentals is available from the Bloomberg terminal. To register, log into the Bloomberg terminal and type BCER <GO> and follow the prompts.

Bloomberg Certificate: Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC)

Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) is a self-paced e-learning course that provides an interactive introduction to the financial markets. BMC consists of 3 sections

  • Core Concepts (includes four modules – Economic Indicators, Currencies, Fixed Income, Equities)
  • Getting Started on the Terminal
  • Portfolio Management

The sections are woven together from Bloomberg data, news, analytics and television.

BMC is available from the Bloomberg terminal. To register, log into the Bloomberg terminal and type BCER <GO> and follow the prompts.

Bloomberg ESG Certificate

The Bloomberg ESG Certificate is a self paced, interactive e-learning course that will show you how to implement ESG (Environmental, social and governance) strategies and prepare ESG reports for regulators through the lens of a fictitious buy-side asset management firm.

You will follow practitioners at the firm as they launch new ESG products to meet client demand and implement ESG strategies into their investment process.

By taking ESG, you will:

  • Describe ESG trends and common ESG investment strategies
  • Explain how shareholder activism influences corporate behaviour
  • Practice tasks within various stages of the investment process

Bloomberg Spreadsheet Analysis Certificate

Bloomberg Spreadsheet Analysis (BSA) is a self-paced course that provides foundational skills in Bloomberg Query Language (BQL) and its practical application within Excel. Through real-world scenarios, you’ll learn to filter, analyze, and aggregate financial data across macro, equities, and fixed income.

BSA is available from the Bloomberg terminal. To register, log into the Bloomberg terminal and type BCER <GO> and follow the prompts.

LSEG Finance Essentials

The LSEG Finance Essentials program offers students and market practitioners the opportunity to build a clear understanding of the markets and finance. Designed by industry-leading instructors at Training the Street and finance experts at LSEG, the program offers a carefully organized educational series that delivers a clear framework of the foundations of the Capital Markets.

Capital IQ Pro Certification

The Capital IQ Pro 101 certification is self-paced and takes you through the following milestones:

  • Market Monitoring: You will learn how to customize your Capital IQ Pro platform experience, create relevant alerts, and personalize your dashboard to monitor the markets you care about whenever and wherever you are.
  • Company Information: You will learn how to dig deep into our data using corporate profiles and Document Viewer, then build reports from this data using Report Builder.
  • Office & Screening: You will learn how to use Screener and Capital IQ Pro Office to search for companies and detailed transactions, build custom models, and aggregate financial data.
  • Data Visualization: You’ll learn how to create impressive presentations in a fraction of the time, using Mapping and Chart Builder.
  • (Optional) Visible Alpha: You will learn how to access Visible Alpha data integrated across the Capital IQ Pro platform and Office Plug-in to enhance your valuation analysis workflows.
