Why is CILIP Professional Registration important?

CILIP Professional Registration supports:

Building reflective practice

We expect our students to be reflective learners and to develop digital skills to collect evidence and reflect on their learning. The UoE’s Learning and Teaching Strategy sets out that it will “recruit and nurture excellent staff by ensuring opportunity for reflection, development and innovation”   In a recent article, Sheila Corrall points out that the reflective processes required for CILIP registration are critical to professional practice for library staff engaged in supporting and delivering learning. The CILIP Registration process provides a well established and supported, information–domain specific pathway to build and embed these reflective skills. The reflective processes required by CILIP registration also support the annual review process, as CPD logs and reflective statements can be used as part of annual review.

Recognition of professional values

CILIP Registration shares its methodology of demonstrating professional development through a reflective portfolio with several other professions, including nursing, social work and education. Candidates receive recognition and endorsement of the learning they are already doing in all kinds of ways – such as work projects (successful and unsuccessful), twitter conversations, professional reading and visiting other libraries, as well as going on courses.  In ISG, staff development using submission of a reflective portfolio is also supported through the University of Edinburgh CMALT Scheme, which enables professional registration with the Association of Learning Technology.

Innovation and change

The reflective process of CILIP registration works to support change, because it requires candidates to reflect on the past, in order to understand the present, and then to take action to deliver the future. Because the focus of the whole process is the candidate themselves, it enables workplace learning from on-the-job activities and from reflecting on difficulties and failures.
