Academic Support Librarian for Music
New subject guides for Race and Decolonial Studies and Diversifying your curriculum
The Academic Support Librarian team have created two new subject guides giving advice on resources relating to race studies, diversifying and decolonising the curriculum, and matters relating to EDI (Equality, Diversity and Inclusion).
You can access the Diversifying Toolkit here.
This guide assists with the work of diversifying resources used in teaching. Designed to help academic staff begin assessing the readings they already use to make their curriculum more inclusive.

Databases for Jazz
- Naxos Music Library JazzNaxos Music Library Jazz [NMLJ] offers a mix selection of jazz legends and contemporary jazz. Recordings of over 32,000 artists are represented. The recordings in Naxos Music Library Jazz come from over 200 labels, and include the catalogue of Blue Note Records, Warner Jazz, EMI, Fantasy and others. There are three search modes available: browse the library alphabetically by CD title, keyword search by name of artist, track or disc title, and advanced search by a combination of criteria. Access with iPhone or iPod Touch: The Naxos Music Library Jazz App is available through the iTunes App Store.
An essential, unique collection of American jazz periodicals, a primary source reference and research tool, and of great importance to any lover of jazz and its history. This database benefits from RIPM’s partnership with the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, which holds the most extensive collection of jazz periodicals in the world.
- Qwest TV EDU: A global hub for music and culture, founded by Quincy Jones, giving access to 1300+ concerts and documentary films in jazz, soul, funk, classical and global music. Listed on DiscoverEd and on the Music databases list and A-Z of library databases.
- Entertainment Industry Magazine ArchiveAn archival research resource containing the essential primary sources for studying the history of the film and entertainment industries, from the era of vaudeville and silent movies through to 2000.
The core US and UK trade magazines covering film, music, broadcasting and theatre are all included, together with film fan magazines and music press titles.
Magazines have been scanned cover-to-cover in high-resolution colour, with granular indexing of all articles, covers, ads and reviews. - Music and Dance OnlineA large, diverse and comprehensive catalogue of online music content from Alexander Street (a ProQuest company). From classical music, to alternative rock, to zydeco, from ballet to operatic arias to alternative dance, Alexander Street's music and dance resources cover many genres and content formats.

- Oxford Music OnlineProvides access to The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, and The Oxford Companion to Music and the Encyclopedia of Popular Music.
- Rock's Back PagesRock's Backpages is a comprehensive online database of music writing and journalism, sourced from the pages of the music and mainstream press. It is a library of primary source, full text articles (reviews, interviews, features and more) from the early 1950s to the present day.

- National Jazz Archive (UK)Digital research and information centre for the history of jazz, blues, and related music. It is free to all who wish to explore its collections for research, learning, inspiration, and enjoyment.
- Louis Armstrong House Museum Digital ArchiveThis site gives free access to the digitised archives of the Louis Armstrong House Museum at Corona, Queens, New York. NB You need to create an account in order to watch videos or listen to audio clips from the archive.
- Library of Congress Digital CollectionsThe US Library of Congress digital collections include an immense array of resources relating to jazz history, recordings and performance.
Visiting other Music libraries in Edinburgh
The Music Library at Edinburgh Central (public) Library, George IV Bridge, contains the largest collection of publicly accessible material on music and dance in Scotland, including sheet music, books and recorded music on CD, DVD, and streaming through Naxos Music Library. It also loans sets of vocal and orchestral music to local choirs and orchestras and has a digital piano, a digital keyboard and electronic drum kit in their music practice room, and an Acoustic Pod available to book.
